The young leader inspiring a new wave of lifesavers in Newman
At just 27, Genevieve Masa is already helping shape the future of water safety education across the Pilbara as Newman’s new Talent Pool Regional Coordinator!
Since stepping into the position in March, she has been involved in leading a range of programs and events to give young people the chance to build confidence, learn how to stay safe around water, and take steps toward future employment opportunities in the aquatic industry.
The Talent Pool program provides training and support to help Indigenous youth in regional communities to develop first-time employment skills, take on leadership roles, and explore future careers as swim teachers, pool lifeguards and aquatic managers.
Community water safety education is a major focus of Gen’s work in the Pilbara. After recently qualifying as an Aquatic Trainer, she already put her new skills into action during a visit to Punmu, where she led water safety sessions at RAWA Community School and helped four local staff earn their Bronze Medallion certifications.
“I really love learning and teaching the skills that are involved in the aquatic industry,” Gen shared.
Her passion for working with young people is clear, noting how rewarding it is to help them believe in themselves and try something new.
“I think for me it’s their eagerness to learn new things... [I always say] just take a leap of faith, take your chances, and you’ll see what turns out from it.”
In the past few months, Gen has helped deliver a range of local programs, including a water safety talk at Newman Primary School and a community laser tag session with Jigalong Youth Centre, led by Talent Pool. She also helped organise a pre-NAIDOC Week dinner hosted with the Talent Pool Academy in Newman, bringing young people together to connect and celebrate their progress.
“I’ve come to fall in love with Newman,” she revealed. “I love this community and how we all work together and collaborate.”
Royal Life Saving WA is proud to support young leaders like Gen through Talent Pool. The program continues to grow, led by people who believe in the potential of the next generation—and who are helping them see it in themselves.
