Multicultural Steering Committee advances inclusion in WA aquatic centres

The Royal Life Saving WA Multicultural Steering Committee met in early November to progress initiatives that embed cultural inclusion across aquatic centres in Western Australia.

During the meeting, members reviewed the draft Culturally Inclusive Aquatic Centres Framework, developed from key findings in a desktop audit of best-practice facilities.

The Framework provides practical strategies to ensure aquatic centres are welcoming to everyone, addressing areas such as cultural awareness, inclusive communication, accessible resources, fair recruitment practices, and anti-discrimination policies. It is designed to support local governments and facility operators to embed inclusion across all aspects of aquatic programs and services.

Committee members also reviewed Cultural Awareness Training resources designed to support tailored, face-to-face training for aquatic industry staff and water safety programs delivered within diverse communities.

In addition, the Committee considered draft Terms of Reference for a proposed Disability Steering Committee, which will focus on improving access to swimming and water safety education for people with disabilities and advocating for broader systemic change.

Royal Life Saving WA Manager of Inclusion Programs and Capacity Achol Madong said the Committee plays a key role in ensuring that programs and staff reflect the diverse needs of Western Australians.

“We are excited to partner with six facilities to pilot initiatives that will make aquatic centres more welcoming and culturally inclusive environments for our communities. Equally, we look forward to launching the Royal Life Saving WA Disability Steering Committee, which will advocate for accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities.”

The work of the Multicultural Steering Committee reflects Royal Life Saving WA’s ongoing commitment to removing barriers to water safety education and fostering inclusive aquatic environments for all Western Australians.
