Three decades of dedication recognised

This month, Royal Life Saving WA bids farewell to our General Manager of Operations, Ian Brown, as he retires following an extraordinary 30-year career with us.

When Ian first joined in 1994, Royal Life Saving WA delivered only a handful of courses, such as Bronze Medallion and Resuscitation, reaching fewer than 2,000 people each year.

Today, thanks in large part to the strong foundations he helped lay, we are a nationally respected Registered Training Organisation, delivering more than 30,000 qualifications annually across areas including Pool Lifeguard, Swim Teacher, Technical Pool Operator, Senior First Aid, and Certificate II, III and IV in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation.

Beyond WA, Ian has contributed significantly to the broader Royal Life Saving network, playing key roles in national initiatives and international development work in Singapore. He also guided the organisation through critical transitions, overseeing corporate infrastructure and ICT systems that proved essential during the challenges of COVID-19. His steady leadership has ensured Royal Life Saving WA remained resilient and adaptable in times of rapid change.

Colleagues describe Ian as dependable, insightful and humble, with an unwavering commitment to excellence. Chief Executive Officer Peter Leaversuch, Training Manager Jacqui Lamb, and General Manager of Community Development Greg Tate all spoke warmly of Ian’s loyalty, guidance, and meticulous standards.

“It’s hard to put 40 years into a few words, but working with Ian has been like having a big brother at work — someone who's always had my back. He's been a guide, a protector, and a true friend,” reflected Jacqui, who has worked alongside Ian throughout his entire tenure at Royal Life Saving.

“He has been extraordinarily dependable, and his attention to detail is second to none. We will miss his focus and tireless commitment to overall excellence,” Greg added.

Executive Manager of Organisational Development Allan Godfrey also paid tribute to Ian’s lasting impact.

“Ian was the driving force in Royal Life Saving’s digital transformation and a catalyst for the modernisation of our online presence. At a personal level, I’ve greatly valued his knowledge, pragmatism and wit, and above all, his integrity,” he said.

Known for his calm and logical approach, his willingness to listen, and his respect for others’ perspectives, Ian has never sought praise, yet his legacy is evident in the organisation’s growth and capability today.

To mark the occasion, Ian was presented with an original artwork by Bidyadanga artist Shannola Thomas. The piece, depicting footprints, water and fish, serves as a fitting tribute to his journey and the enduring impact he has made.

Royal Life Saving WA extends its deepest thanks to Ian for his remarkable service and wishes him and his wife Katie every happiness in the next chapter of their lives.
