Major upgrades bring new life to remote community pools

Royal Life Saving WA completed major infrastructure upgrades at the Yandeyarra, Burringurrah and Jigalong remote community pools last year ahead of the busy summer season.

These pools have been central to their communities for more than 25 years, and the recent works will help ensure they remain safe, reliable and welcoming spaces for many years to come.

After decades of constant use, the pools were ready for a facelift. The liners and poolside grating had worn down, and the facilities were working harder than ever to keep up with community demand. All three pools have now been fitted with fresh vinyl liners, new lane markings and new wet deck grating that has given each facility a clean, modern look.

During the upgrades, every plumbing line was pressure tested, with any sections needing attention cleaned and repaired. With this work now complete, the pools are fully watertight, easing the demand on local water supplies and supporting long-term sustainability.

The filtration systems also received a much-needed refresh. The original filters had been in place since the pools first opened and replacing them with six new Chadson units has created a stronger, more reliable setup that supports cleaner water and more efficient operation.

For the people who rely on these pools, the benefits have been immediate. In remote communities, the pool is often a safe place to learn lifesaving skills, spend time with family and find relief during extreme heat.

Since the first remote pool opened in Burringurrah in 1999, an estimated 68,000 visits are recorded across 11 remote pool locations each season. The Remote Pools Project continues to deliver real benefits, including better health outcomes, improved school attendance and stronger social and cultural connections.

These upgrades were made possible thanks to funding from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, along with support from our project partners. We are grateful to Hydrilla for completing the re-lining works, Aquatic Services WA for installing the new filters and Tunnel Vision for carrying out detailed pipe inspections and repairs. Their combined effort has ensured each pool is now in great shape for the season ahead.

Royal Life Saving WA is proud to continue working alongside the Department of Housing and Works to support remote communities through the Remote Pools Project. With continued investment and partnership, these pools will remain safe, functional and accessible spaces that promote wellbeing and strengthen community connections across the state.
