High Grade Mechanical supports SAIL swimming lessons in Mandurah
High Grade Mechanical is helping children with disabilities build confidence and learn essential swimming and water safety skills through a generous $5,000 donation to the Royal Life Saving WA Swim and Survive Fund.
The donation will support the Specialised Access and Inclusion Lessons (SAIL) program at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre. SAIL provides one-on-one lessons for children who may experience barriers to participating in traditional swimming programs, including children with physical, sensory, behavioural or intellectual disability.
Based in the Rockingham and Mandurah area, High Grade Mechanical is a leading provider of heavy mobile maintenance services for Western Australia’s mining and civil industries. In Term 3, their donation will help nearly 30 children with disabilities to build their swimming skills, water safety knowledge and confidence in and around the water.
People with disability and pre-existing medical conditions sadly face a significantly higher risk of drowning than the general population. For children with autism, the risk of drowning is up to three times higher than for children without autism.
Despite this increased risk, many children and families are unable to find lessons that meet their needs. Busy group classes, physical barriers at aquatic facilities and the cost of one-on-one instruction can all make water safety education harder to access. 
SAIL helps remove these barriers with personalised lessons for each child. Instructors can adapt communication and teaching methods, giving children the time and support they need to learn at their own pace.
Royal Life Saving WA Manager of Inclusion Programs and Capacity, Achol Madong, said support from local businesses helps make swimming and water safety education more accessible for families.
“Support and donations from businesses and members of our community go a long way in helping vulnerable children learn to swim. High Grade Mechanical’s generous donation of $5,000 will go toward subsidising one-on-one swimming lessons for nearly 30 children living with disabilities in Mandurah.”
