Lotterywest grant to support the future of Royal Life Saving WA’s Aquatic Hub
Royal Life Saving WA is pleased to receive $518,294 in funding from Major Supporter Lotterywest towards significant upgrades to our Mt Claremont Head Office, helping create a more accessible, sustainable and welcoming aquatic hub for the Western Australian community.
The funding will contribute towards internal and external building upgrades designed to support communities across Western Australia to increase connection and safety.
Built in 1996, the Royal Life Saving WA Head Office has evolved considerably over the past 30 years as our organisation, programs and partnerships have grown. Today, the site is also home to Swimming WA, Water Polo WA, Artistic Swimming WA, Paddle WA, and the Leisure Institute of Western Australia bringing organisations together in a shared facility focused on collaboration and improving outcomes for communities across the state.
Around 10,000 people are estimated to directly benefit from the facility each year through community events, forums, workshops, committee meetings and other activities, while the organisations based at the hub support members and coordinate programs reaching communities throughout Western Australia.
Creating a place for the future
The Lotterywest grant will support the next stage of Royal Life Saving WA’s long-term plan to ensure the Head Office remains functional, inclusive and sustainable for decades to come.
Planned works include much-needed upgrades to the building exterior and surrounding areas, alongside improvements to accessibility, meeting and community spaces. After 30 years of use, the building is experiencing the expected effects of age, including ongoing roof leaks and general wear to external areas. The broader upgrade program will address these issues while improving the sustainability and resilience of the site, helping ensure it remains fit for purpose for decades to come.
Importantly, the project will help create a physical environment that better reflects the diverse communities Royal Life Saving WA and its aquatic partners serve.
The plans include extending the outdoor and Reconciliation common space and incorporating themes of knowledge, healing and life, recognising the deep and continuing connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with water.
Royal Life Saving WA CEO Peter Leaversuch said the investment would help ensure the organisation has the infrastructure needed to continue bringing people together and supporting communities across the state.
“Our work has grown significantly over the past decade, both in the communities we support and the partnerships we have built. This funding will help us create a place that reflects that growth, one that is accessible, inclusive and sustainable, and brings people together to make Western Australians safer around water.”

Supporting connected and safer communities
Royal Life Saving WA’s purpose is bringing people together to eliminate drowning and empower communities to be safe around water.
From swimming and water safety education to workforce development, research, advocacy, community programs and support for safer aquatic facilities, our work reaches people of all ages and backgrounds across Western Australia.
With the support of Lotterywest, the improvements will strengthen the place from which much of this work is coordinated, while supporting greater collaboration between organisations working towards a shared vision for aquatics in WA.
Lotterywest Acting CEO Lorna Pritchard said Royal Life Saving WA played an important role in helping Western Australians build the skills, knowledge, and confidence to stay safe around water.
“Lotterywest is pleased to support upgrades that will enhance accessibility, strengthen community connections, and provide a welcoming space for the thousands of people who use this shared aquatic hub each year,” she said.
“Thanks to everyone who plays Lotto, Lotterywest distributed more than $400 million to Western Australian communities last year.
“This grant is a great example of how those funds support projects that strengthen community infrastructure, encourage collaboration, and create places where communities can thrive."
Royal Life Saving WA acknowledges Lotterywest as a Major Supporter and thanks Lotterywest for its investment in infrastructure that will help us continue connecting with and supporting communities across Western Australia.
