Oxygen equipment is a vital part of your lifesaving kit, so it is important to make sure it is ready for use at the start of each day or shift.

Simple daily checks can help ensure your equipment is in good working order and available when it is needed.

  • Check the heat tab on the oxygen cylinder for any sign of exposure to heat.
  • Check the tubing for splits, dirt or kinks.
  • Check the contents gauge and ensure the cylinder is at least half full.
  • Check that the correct resuscitation and therapy masks are available, clean and in good condition.
  • Check that spare Bodok seals are available and that the seal fitted to the regulator is not damaged, split or missing.

If you notice leaking during your checks, the Bodok seal may be damaged, missing or incorrectly positioned. Report any leaks, faults, damage or missing parts immediately and ensure unsafe equipment is not used.

If you work across different aquatic facilities, you may find different brands or models of oxygen equipment in use. This makes it even more important to check the equipment, know where it is stored and understand how it operates at each facility.

Being familiar with emergency equipment can save valuable seconds when responding to an incident. Make these checks part of your daily routine so both you and your equipment are ready to respond!
