Pemberton resident wins big
Pemberton resident Hazel won $10,000 cash in the June 2024 Royalty VIP Club raffle but, for her, it was never just about the prize. Hazel, a loyal supporter of the Royalty VIP Club for over a year, values the impact her contribution makes.
As a naturalised Australian citizen, Hazel never learnt to swim as a child, but she always knew how important it was to have as a skill, especially after having children of her own.
“When I had my boys I thought, ‘There’s no way I’m going to have children that can’t swim and can’t join in, especially as our beautiful country is surrounded by water,” she said.
Having struggled to learn how to swim just 25 metres of breaststroke, and often having to miss out on having fun with her friends, Hazel never wanted her children to have the same experience and ensured that they were able to swim well and be confident around water of any depth.
“I can’t dive in or jump in or anything and it’s just horrendous. You know, when I’m around water it’s just fear. Whereas for my boys, it’s nothing as they are both strong swimmers.”
As a result of her own experiences, Hazel was all too eager to support the Royal Life Saving WA raffles when she encountered one of our fundraising teams at her local shops, despite her husband's skepticism.
“When I signed up, I thought, ‘This could help a child like me that didn’t know how to swim or didn't have the opportunity to go and learn.’ I definitely encourage everyone to support Royal Life Saving WA.”
The Royalty VIP Club raffles directly support the Royal Life Saving WA Swim and Survive Fund. The Swim and Survive Fund gives at-risk children throughout WA access to swimming lessons, tailored to their needs, at little to no cost.
For many children, access to swimming and water safety education is limited due to financial, medical or cultural barriers, making them extremely vulnerable to drowning. The contributions of supporters like Hazel give those most at-risk in our community access to vital swimming and water safety education. Without our supporters’ generosity we would not be able to continue our lifesaving work.
