Rules for Pools and Spas

A young girl reaches up to open a glass pool barrier

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety's Building and Energy division has published a handbook for pool and spa owners, outlining the requirements pertaining to safety barrier compliance and the need to comply.

The booklet covers information for both pre- and post-May 2016 pools (when the barrier regulations changed) as well as answers to frequently asked questions, such as:

  • Can I use my boundary/dividing fence as part of the barrier?
  • Does my above-ground pool require a barrier?
  • Do I need a safety barrier around my fish pond?
  • Does my spa require a barrier?

A detailed explanation, including diagrams, of all barrier types can be found within the handbook.
