Accidental falls into water are one of the leading causes of drowning in Western Australia. Slips, trips and tumbles from slippery or rocky surfaces are common, particularly near inland waterways or coastal locations.
In 2023, 44% of fatal drownings during aquatic activities such as boating, fishing and other recreation, were caused by a person slipping or falling into the water unprepared.
Here are 4 simple steps you can take to help keep yourself and your loved ones safe around the water:
1. Read the signs
Don’t ignore the obvious and pay attention to the condition of walkways and safety signs. Whether the sign recommends staying away from the edge, watching out for rogue waves or wearing appropriate footwear— your best bet is to do as it says!
2. Wear a lifejacket
Lifejackets should always be worn when on a boat, fishing or climbing rocks. They help protect you if you accidentally fall in, especially in the case of an injury.
3. Stay within arm’s reach
Always stay close to those around you, especially children and the elderly, in case of an accident. When fishing or hiking in remote areas, be careful to never get separated from your group and work together to navigate slippery or loose surfaces.
4. Take it slow
'Slippery when wet' doesn’t just apply to roads. Any surface can become slick after rain or when near water spray. After swimming, dry off thoroughly to avoid spreading water on the floor, and avoid running on wet surfaces to reduce your risk of slipping.
5. Think before you snap
The perfect photo isn’t worth the risk. Avoid taking selfies near the edge of cliffs, rocks, or unstable surfaces and keep your eyes on where you’re standing, not just your screen. If you want a photo by the water, ask someone else to take it from a safe distance.
Injury or drowning can happen even if you never planned to enter the water. Stay safe from slippery surfaces by following our tips and looking out for yourself and those around you!
