TEACHER CONSISTENCY
Swim Teacher consistency is paramount in maximising student learning and promoting progression.
Swim teacher consistency allows students to form a bond, build a relationship and develop trust in their swim teacher, which in turn alleviates any potential fears or concerns the student may have developed around water. Swim teachers should learn names, record progression, and understand the individual needs of each student as the lessons progress.
All of this ultimately helps the student to feel more comfortable and willing to attend lessons consistently.
Changing swim teachers too often can lead to student regression and ultimately parents/carers cancelling enrolments.
Rostering tips include:
- To reduce burnout, it is recommended for teaching staff to be rostered on for no more than 20 hours in water work per week. Working hours should take in consideration individual circumstances, the spread of shifts over the week, seasonal periods and environmental conditions.
- Ask the swim teachers to commit to the full school term or program duration (if an intensive) up front prior to confirming shifts.
- Fairly and evenly distribute “cover” shifts to allow for adequate rest times.
- Understand and become familiar with the employment awards relating to the employment of Swim Teachers.
