DUTY OF CARE OF EMPLOYEES
An aquatic facility or swim school has a duty of care of their employees to ensure their workplace is safe as well as the responsibility of care for the health and well-being of employees whilst undertaking their work duties.
There are a number of reasonable steps program managers should take to protect the safety, health and well-being for their swim teachers.
These included but not limited to:
- Provision of protective clothing as part of the uniform such as rash vests, hats or swimming caps
- Sunscreen, if teaching in outdoor locations
- Adequate breaks between shifts or working hours as per award
- Access to fresh water to rehydrate during shifts
- Staff break area and changerooms with showers
- Regular and up to date training for safe work practices, emergency procedures and evacuations
- Clear and accessible work policies and procedures for workplace health and safety
- Safe teaching area and equipment to conduct their swimming lessons
