Inland Waterways logoThe Inland Waterways program supports regional and remote Western Australian communities to build practical water safety skills and reduce drowning risks at the plentiful inland waterways such as rivers, lakes and streams. Working alongside local government aquatic centres, schools and community groups, the program offers tailored Swim and Survive, Bronze Rescue and Bronze Medallion activities that reflect local priorities and conditions.

Inland waterways are the leading location for drowning in regional WA, with many incidents occurring during everyday activities like swimming, fishing and paddling. Drowning rates are higher in regional WA, with the Kimberley, Mid West and Pilbara regions reporting the highest drowning rates (fatal and non-fatal). By increasing access to swimming and survival skills, rescue techniques and safer decision-making around rivers and lakes, the program aims to empower communities to enjoy country and culture around water while staying safer.

fata drowning is 4.1x more likely in regional WAWith support from the Australian Government through Royal Life Saving Society – Australia, the program focuses on communities at higher risk of drowning. Each location codesigns a local water safety plan through community consultation, then delivers agreed activities such as swimming and water safety lessons, inland waterway safety workshops and leadership and employment pathway opportunities.

A key focus is building local leadership and capacity, with Aboriginal youth leaders and community ambassadors supported to gain recognised lifesaving qualifications and connect to future training and employment in aquatic and recreation roles. Program delivery is supported by culturally relevant learning materials, inland waterway activity books and local stories that help share key safety messages across families and communities.
