While swimming laps at the Goldfields Oasis Recreation Centre, Miriam Ohuma caught the attention of Talent Pool Coordinator, Clint Kelleher, who asked her if she was interested in completing her Bronze Medallion which led to her entry into the Talent Pool program.
In her first two months in the program, Miriam helped run several Community Rescue Club sessions with the PCYC, East Kalgoorlie Primary School and Caps Kurrawang.
Helping to assist at the 2023 Goldfields Spirit Carnival was one of Miriam’s most fond memories of the program saying, “it was a really good day, we helped with the set up and assisting the kids as they participated in the activities.”
She loves how the program takes a hands-on and children-orientated approach whilst still having fun and learning lots of useful skills that are necessary throughout life.
“I’m now confident with CPR and can better manage difficult situations that require the consideration of everyone’s safety. I’ve also learnt how to better interact with kids and how to keep them engaged throughout the session.”
Miriam, being in her final year of school, works for Talent Pool every Wednesday during the day and Friday evenings.
She hopes to continue working with Talent Pool as she really enjoys it and has since applied to undertake Pool Lifeguarding.
After finishing school, Miriam hopes to study Environmental Studies at TAFE. Through Talent Pool, she has discovered that she loves to help people in an active way and hopes this will be a pathway to do that.
