Summer Drowning Prevention Tips

Royal Life Saving wants everyone to stay safe this summer!  Here are our Summer Drowning Prevention Tips;

Always actively supervise children around water

  • Active supervision means being fully present with your child when they are around water - eyes on and hands on.
  • Mobile phones are a tempting distraction, but the time it takes to read an email or scan your Facebook feed is enough time for a child to drown so it's best to keep your mobile phone out of reach while your children are in or near water!

Ensure swimming pools are fenced

  • Swimming pools must be surrounded by a correctly installed and regularly maintained pool fence.
  • Your pool gate must be self-closing and self-latching.

Portable pools pose a drowning risk for young children

  • Always actively supervise children when they are using portable pools, even small paddle pools, it only takes 3cm of water for a child to drown.
  • Always empty portable pools after use and turn paddle pools upside down so that water cannot fill them if it rains.
  • In the case of larger portable pools, with a water depth of 300mm or more, state legislation requires they be fenced with an approved barrier to prevent children from accessing them unsupervised.

Never swim alone

  • Swim with a friend so there is someone to assist should you get into trouble in the water.

Don't Drink and Drown!

  • Never undertake any form of aquatic activity under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Wear a lifejacket

  • When boating, always wear a lifejacket, check weather conditions before setting off, and tell someone where you are going and when you are due back.
