Tips to keep your trip on track

4WD car driving off-road in Australian outback

Dust off the tent, hook up the caravan and pile the eskies in the car— it’s time to get out and explore WA.

Whether you're camping by the coast, heading inland, or finding a quiet spot off the map, there’s nothing like a few days in nature to switch off and recharge. But before you hit the road, it’s worth taking a few simple steps to make sure your trip runs smoothly and safely.

Here are three things to keep in mind for your next camping getaway.

First aid: be ready for the unexpected

No matter how experienced you are, accidents can happen. A well-stocked first aid kit should be one of the first things you pack, along with a small pack of essentials to carry with you during hikes or day trips.

Essentials to include:
  • Assorted band aids, bandages and dressings
  • Tweezers, antiseptic and pain relief
  • Snake bite bandages, especially if you're heading into bushland or remote areas
  • Extra water, towels and warm clothing

Not sure what else to include in your kit? Take a look at our full range of first aid kits, including options for fishing, off-roading, and survival kits for when you’re out and about.

Water safety: think before you jump in

Nothing beats camping by a lake, river or close by the beach. If you’re bringing kayaks or planning a swim, make sure safety always comes first.

Before you head out on the water:
  • Always wear a lifejacket when fishing, kayaking, boating or paddleboarding
  • Check local conditions including water depth, riverbanks, currents and tides
  • Never swim alone and keep young children within arm's reach at all times
  • Keep a rescue aid handy, like an esky lid, rope or long stick

Extreme weather: know before you go

Whether it’s bushfires, damaging winds or flash flooding, WA’s landscapes can change rapidly with the weather. Before you head out camping, it’s important to check what conditions you might face and plan accordingly.

Before you leave:
  • Check the Emergency WA and BOM websites for alerts and forecasts
  • Tune into local radio for live updates, especially in remote areas
  • Know your route and how to reach the nearest hospital, including alternate roads in case of closures
  • Save the number of the local ranger or shire office

Are we there yet?

Time to load the car and get camping— WA’s waiting for you!

A bit of planning, a stocked first aid kit, and up-to-date safety knowledge can help you handle the unexpected and enjoy your trip with confidence.
