Build your career while you work

Royal Life Saving WA offers sport, aquatic and recreation traineeships in Perth and across Western Australia, combining paid employment with practical workplace experience and a nationally recognised qualification.

Traineeships are an employment-based training pathway, allowing you to develop skills relevant to your role while learning on the job. They can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis and are suitable for people entering the industry as well as existing employees looking to develop their skills and progress their careers. Whether you are interested in working in an aquatic facility, sport and recreation centre or another community recreation environment, our traineeship pathways can help you build practical skills and experience while gaining a recognised qualification.

What is a traineeship?

A traineeship combines paid employment, structured training and on-the-job learning. To undertake a traineeship with Royal Life Saving WA, you need to be employed in an appropriate sport, aquatic or recreation workplace and have a registered training contract with your employer. In Western Australia, training contracts are registered and administered through the Department of Training and Workforce Development's Apprenticeship Office.

Rather than separating study from work, trainees apply what they learn within their workplace throughout their qualification. Assessment is completed progressively and may include online, practical and workplace-based activities.

How training works

Your traineeship is designed to combine formal learning with the experience you gain at work. Training can include:

  • online learning and assessment
  • workplace-based learning and practical assessment
  • scheduled training, including face-to-face training for some units
  • regular contact and support from a dedicated Royal Life Saving WA trainer.

Your trainer works with you and your workplace supervisor throughout the traineeship to monitor your progress, support your learning and help ensure you have opportunities to apply your skills in the workplace. Support can include workplace visits, Microsoft Teams sessions, phone and email contact.

Traineeship Fees and Charges

Royal Life Saving WA delivers a range of qualifications through traineeship pathways that may be eligible for Jobs & Skills WA government subsidised training.

Fees for government subsidised training are set in accordance with the Western Australian Government's VET Fees and Charges Policy and may vary depending on the qualification, units selected and the student's individual circumstances.
